Water hammer (often manifested in the “hitting” of water pipes) is caused by
suddenly stopping a quantity of flowing water, whereby the kinetic energy is converted into pressure that can rise to very high values.
In most cases, the problem arises when the flow is stopped by quick-closing valves, such as those found in a variety of water-using machines and appliances. The water tries to find a balance in the tap water system. Dishwashers,
washing machines and quick-closing taps can cause water hammer. This is what creates it
annoying noise from clapping, rattling pipes, but there is also a chance of this happening
leaking pipe joints or damage to appliances.
